Jesuit Journeys Fall 2000
Honoring years
of service
Frs. Mark Niemann, SJ, Phil Pick, SJ, Charlie Kerr, SJ, and James Quinn, SJ (from left) hold awards they received marking 50 years of service as priests. They were among more than 30 Wisconsin Province jubilarians honored during Province Days at Creighton University in June. Jesuits were recognized for years of service ranging from 50 to 75 years as members of the Society of Jesus and 50 to 60 years in the priesthood. |
'Coming home'
to Creighton
Fr. John Schlegel, SJ (center) meets informally with students on campus during his first days on the job as the 23rd president of Creighton University. His return to the Midwest, Omaha, and the university was a homecoming of sorts. Fr. Schlegel was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa and held a variety of administrative and teaching positions at Creighton from 1969-82. He most recently served as president of the University of San Francisco from 1991 until accepting the presidency at Creighton earlier this year. His decision to return to Creighton was "based in part on a desire to go home to the institution that introduced me to higher education administration," he says. Fr. Schlegel's official installation was scheduled for Sept. 15 as part of three days of inaugural activities on and around campus. |
Professing vows
Scholastics Matt Walsh, SJ (left in photo right) and Rick Ralphson, SJ carry incense during the entrance procession at Vow Mass in the College of St. Catherine's Chapel in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jim Bopp, SJ (left in photo far right) and Sami Helewa, SJ pronounced first vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience at a ceremony in August. They move on to the next stage of their formation (philosophy studies) this year while eight new men enter the novitiate and join four second-year novices. |
