Jesuit Journeys
Spring/Summer 2001

Dear Friends:

I was driving near Rochester, Minnesota on my way home to Milwaukee in late March and decided to visit a patient at the Mayo Clinic whom I had never met.

Gerry Rauenhorst, an extremely kind and generous friend of the Jesuits for decades, was recovering from bypass surgery. Gerry has been a partner in so many of our ministries for decades. In fact, he was a partner long before we ever began using the term. Despite having never met, I felt like I had known him for years. This feeling was confirmed seconds after I entered.

As we visited and prayed together, I was reminded of all our partners who walk side-by-side with us in our many ministries. You number in the thousands. And as I complete my final weeks as provincial, I feel I have met far too few of you.

We call our lay collaborators by many names - Jesuit Partners, Ignatian Associates, Jesuit volunteers, among others. But together we share one mission: helping God build His earthly Kingdom.

So I would like to take this opportunity to recognize you for your generosity to the Wisconsin Province and its many works. I have witnessed the power of that generosity and wish it were possible to tell each of you personally how much you mean to the Jesuits of this province.

You lift our spirits and inspire us. And as I thank you one final time on behalf of all my brother Jesuits, please be assured that we remember you in our daily prayers and Masses.

D. Edward Mathie, SJ: ProvincialSincerely in the Lord,

D. Edward Mathie, SJ
