Jesuit photographer, co-workers complete DVD about Society

In the works for more than two years, a DVD featuring stories about the Society of Jesus at the turn of the second millennium is now available to the general public.

Created by Fr. Don Doll, SJ, a renowned Jesuit photojournalist and Creighton University Fine Arts Professor, and former National Jesuit News Editor Elizabeth O’Keefe, the DVD features pieces filmed on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, El Salvador, and India, among other locations. Rolf Behrens, a documentary filmmaker with more than 18 years of international experience, also worked on the project.

Titled Jesuit Journeys, The Society of Jesus at the Turn of the Millenium, the DVD can be navigated like a CD-ROM. “It is an excellent tool for presenting social justice issues in the classroom, especially in our Jesuit high schools and universities,” says Fr. Doll. “It may even help attract young men to join the Jesuits.”

A short biography of St. Ignatius of Loyola narrated by Tom Lucas, SJ, an art historian at the University of San Francisco, is also on the disk along with several interviews. They include talks with Vincent O’Keefe, SJ, former vicar general of the Jesuits in Rome, Jon Sobrino, SJ, a theologian in El Salvador, and Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, SJ, current superior general of the Jesuits in Rome. These men reflect on Liberation Theology, the killing of the Jesuits in El Salvador, Archbishop Romero, and the Church after the 1968 Medillin conference. Other Jesuits from the U.S., India, and El Salvador talk about why they became and remain Jesuits.

Awards at Creighton Prep honor service

Service and loyalty were the themes when two Jesuits and two lay collaborators were honored by Creighton Prep at the school’s annual Loyola Dinner of Honor and Distinction.

Fr. Peter E. Marchetti, SJ
Fr. Peter E. Marchetti, SJ
Fr. Peter E. Marchetti, SJ was named alumnus of the year. Fr. Tim Lannon, SJ and area businessman Michael L. Dahir, chair of the Jesuit Partnership’s Omaha Council, were named to Prep’s Hall of Fame. And Jan Peters received the Ancilla Domini Award, for displaying the courage and strength shown by Mary when she agreed to be the mother of God. All were honored at a dinner in September.

Ordained in 1977, Fr. Marchetti worked at Sts. Peter and Paul in Mankato, Minnesota and taught sociology at Marquette University before 1980 when he began 17 years of service in Nicaragua, based at the Jesuit Universidad Centroamericana. He taught, worked with Basic Ecclesial Communities throughout the country, and directed special seminars and retreats for farmers on how to form Christian-based cooperatives. Since 1997, he has been pastor of the Catholic parish communities in Tocoa, Colon, Honduras, perhaps the largest Catholic parish in the Western Hemisphere with 150,000 parishioners, 5 priests, 3,000 co-workers, 16 churches, and 150 chapels.

Fr. Marchetti has taken the lead in speaking out against the drug lords’ practice of taking land from indigenous people and was a leader in the recovery after Hurricane Mitch.

Fr. Tim Lannon, SJ

Fr. Lannon entered the Society of Jesus in 1977 and was ordained in 1986. He serves today as the vice president for University Advancement at Marquette University where he oversees alumni relations and fund raising activities. Fr. Lannon earned a doctorate in administration, planning and social policy in higher education in 2000 and a master’s in education in 1996, both from Harvard University. He is a member of the boards of Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Michael Dahir
Michael Dahir
Dahir is a 1966 graduate of Prep who went on to Creighton University where he majored in accounting. After graduation he spent about four years in public accounting before joining Omaha National Bank in 1974 (subsequently USBank) where he held various management positions. In 1988 Dahir and a small group of investors purchased Omaha State Bank, a $200 million community bank. He served on Prep’s first Governing Board when, in 1990, the school shifted from a Jesuit Board of Trustees that was supported by a Lay Board of Advisors to an integrated board of trustees. He served two consecutive terms from 1990 to 1996, chairing the board’s Development Committee. He was instrumental in organizing the inaugural Men For Others Golf Tournament in October 2000, which raised $50,000 for scholarships to Prep.

Jan Peters
Jan Peters
Peters has volunteered at Prep since 1994 when her eldest son, Doug, was a sophomore. She helped with several sports teams, Campus Ministry, Prep Moms, the book sale, Prep hot lunches, and the annual BASH auction.

She graduated from California’s Santa Barbara City College with a Surgery Tech Certificate and worked 13 years at Methodist Hospital as a surgical assistant. She has worked on-call at various doctors’ offices for the past 12 years. Her husband, Dave Peters, is a 1969 Prep graduate. Three of their four sons are graduates of Prep.

‘Hopeworks ’n Camden’ redesigns Jesuit website

The Wisconsin Province website has undergone a virtual makeover with the help of a central city ministry in Camden, New Jersey.

Founded by Fr. Jeff Putthoff, SJ, Hopeworks ’n Camden provides computer training and work experience to Camden youth while preparing them for today’s technology jobs.

“This level of training is rarely available and accessible to financially marginalized communities,” Fr. Putthoff says.

Currently, Hopeworks has more than 20 regular trainees, all at different stages in their training and several of whom are applying to college. “We want to get them excited about learning and develop confidence in their ability to learn. That helps them see and discover new options,” Fr. Putthoff says.

Several trainees are working on GED programs in addition to their Hopeworks training. Some attend 3-D animation classes at Rutgers University/Camden. Others attend classes at Camden Community College.

“Some trainees gain work experience and earn a stipend or small salary by working on client accounts,” says April Claggett, Hopeworks project manager.

Claggett headed up the team that worked on the Wisconsin Province web site. “More and more interested youth come to us regularly,” she says. “We’re rapidly running out of workstations.”
