It's a Family-like Affair

The
Jesuit Volunteer Corps Midwest’s Milwaukee Community is taking
on a different look this year – a decidedly family-like appearance
compliments of a married couple from Iowa who bring a multigenerational
quality to the group residence. At 57 years old John and Laura Locher
have about 35 years on most JVCers. In fact,
they’re older than some members’ parents.
“ I had an idea there would be a married couple in the house,” says
Megan Gingrich, one of six other community members in the more conventional 20-something
range. “I admit I was very surprised when I saw their photo.” |

Starting in 1956, more than 7,000 JVC volunteers have committed themselves
to helping the poor. Throughout the U.S.and internationally, hundreds of schools and non-profit organizations have relied on JVC
to help provide essential services. Members generally leave their own areas
and commit to at least one year of service, prayer, and living simply in community
while working for room, board, and a small monthly stipend. For example,
Gingrich, a Houston native, attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio
where she earned a BA in biology in 2003 and was an active volunteer. Her previous
service in the health care field will serve her well in the coming year as a clinical assistant at Walkers
Point Community Clinic.
