PINE RIDGE, S.D. – Four Red
Cloud High School graduates were awarded Gates MillenniumScholars
Program scholarships to continue their education at the college
and university level this fall. These prestigious awards are
funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The honored students and the schools
they have chosen to attend are: Jason Clifford
(University of San Francisco); Blue Dawn Little
(Creighton University, Omaha); Shayna Richards
(South Dakota State University, Brookings); and Sarah
White (Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South
Dakota).
These scholarships are granted through
a very competitive application process and recognize academic
excellence, leadership, strong dedication to service in community
and vision in high school graduates from around the country.
Recipients of a Gates Millennium scholarship are awarded all
of their unmet financial need throughout their four years
of undergraduate education, with aid sometimes extended to
graduate studies in the areas of mathematics, science, engineering,
education, or library science.
“Receiving a Gates Scholarship represents
four years of hard work on the part of these students throughout
their high school careers and serious attention to a very
competitive and rigorous application process,” said Fr.
Peter Klink, SJ, president of Red Cloud. “In the
past years, 11 Red Cloud graduates have been so honored.”
