Dear Friends,
“Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in
a dream.” Dreams play a prominent rolein the history
of our relationship with God. To attend to them is important.
This issue of JesuitJourneys contains stories about dreamers
who, with God’s
grace and the help of others, work to build a better world.
Fr. John Patrick Donnelly, SJ shares a brief history of St. Ignatius, his
early companions, and how the end of their dream of going to Jerusalem became
the beginning of the Society of Jesus. We also have poignant photos and an
account by Fr. Don Doll, SJ about a dream Fr. Tony Wach, SJ has for helping
the people of Gulu in northern Uganda. A story about establishing
a Jesuitsponsored Cristo Rey high school in the Twin Cities is about both the
dreams of those who want to build it and the hopes and dreams of the youth they
will serve and educate.
This is a very special Jubilee Year for the Society of Jesus. We celebrate
and honor St. Ignatius on the anniversary of hism death (July 31, 1556) and
the anniversaries of the births of St. Francis Xavier (April 7, 1506) and Bl.
Peter
Faber (April 13, 1506). During this Jubilee Year, we recall the ways in which
the dreams of those early founders became the vision that Ignatius sets out
in the Constitutions, the mission that Francis undertakes in his work of evangelization,
and the prayer that Peter shares in giving the Spiritual Exercises.
The generosity, prayers, and dreams of all our lay colleagues and Partners
help the Wisconsin Province carry on this tradition of working to realize our
early founders’ vision, mission,
and prayer.
I thank you all for believing that the Word of the Lord comes to us in dreams
and for working together in service to our Church and our God.
