JESUIT FROM INDIA JOINS LAKOTA SCHOOL STAFF
PINE RIDGE, SD – Fr. Paul Coelho, SJ,
a Jesuit from the Kohima Region in northeast India, has joined
the staff as principal at Red Cloud High School on the Pine
Ridge Reservation.
He will work side-by-side with Bob Brave Heart, school superintendent.
The move is significant in that it marks the first time a
member of the Kohima Region in northeast India, with which
the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus has a twinning
agreement, has been released to work in the U.S.
Fr. Peter Klink, SJ, school president, says, “We are truly excited about Fr. Coelho’s presence with us.
He brings a competence that will enrich our ministry and so much more. Having worked in education among the tribal peoples of the Kohima Region, he brings different experiences and insights to us. At the same time, I trust his experience at Red Cloud and with the Lakota people will also give him new insights that he can carry back to Kohima.”
Red Cloud High School is part of the Red Cloud Indian School system that includes Red Cloud Elementary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and has a combined student body of approximately 800 students. As part of the Holy Rosary Mission, the schools work to help develop a vibrant Church through an education of the mind and spirit that promotes the values of the Lakota culture.
